Extra Curricular
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
There is much more to life than just studying at Alde Valley Academy, so we make sure our curriculum is supported with a high quality and varied enrichment and extra-curricular programme. These activities provide opportunities for students to participate in clubs, trips and events which broaden and enrich learning.
Students are encouraged to take part in local and national subject-based competitions, team building and leadership enhancing activities, including Student Ambassadors, School Council and sports activities. We also encourage involvement in special university events such as biotech and robotics.
There is a long-standing culture of sport enriching activities such as team games, badminton, table tennis, trampolining, swimming and the use of our own fitness suite, which can be accessed through after school clubs with PE staff and external coaches. We also participate in a range of sporting competitions and fixtures against other schools, both locally and regionally. We believe that the promotion of a healthy lifestyle is fundamental to the wellbeing of all.
Examples of extra-curricular activities:
Dora Love – we have been joint winners of the Dora Love prize, run by the University of Essex and named after a Holocaust survivor who dedicated her life to fighting the intolerance, discrimination and hatred that made the Holocaust possible.
Suffolk Young Poet competition and Drama and Script writing workshops with INK.
Music workshops, choir and band performances at local events including Snape Maltings.
School Musical Production.
Opportunities to exhibit students artwork in exhibitions, both within the local community and further afield. Visits to Tate Modern and Tate Gallery.
Theatre visits and productions to enhance Drama and support English GCSE texts, whenever possible.
Modern Foreign Language trip to Lille Christmas Market and pen pal links with a school in France.
Normandy: every year we offer Year 8 and 9 students the inspirational opportunity to visit the tear-jerking battlefields and cemeteries made famous in ‘Saving Private Ryan.’ We visit the seaside town of Arromanche, the cathedral city of Bayeux (including the Tapestry) with chances to practise French while sampling French patisserie! This educational, emotional trip which combines fun with fact ends with Paris, the Eiffel Tower - and of course a day in Disneyland Paris!
These are in addition to the multiple inter-school activities that regularly occur throughout the year, including Inter-House competitions and charity events.
